Just by comparing my photo to other pics of various species and deciding which one consistently looked closest. I wish I could say it was through a more scientific process.

No problem
We do that too. I'd just add a not that ID is based on other in the guide that look similar. If we find there are a lot of similar looking species in your area we may have to move back to genus level at some point, but right now I just don't know. Thanks for clarifying.
