Huckleberry Caterpillar - Melanchra assimilis

Huckleberry Caterpillar - Melanchra assimilis
Graves Creek Road, Sanders County, Montana, USA
August 22, 2006
I don't have any of my caterpillar guides! This is a pretty green, white, black and yellow striped caterpillar. It curled up when disturbed like an armyworm or cutworm does. Also, the markings on the face may be huckleberry juice, I'm not sure. Found on a huckleberry bush.

Sorry for the confusion it was confirmed as M. assimilis.

Thanks, this one was confirmed by David Wagner through MSU.

How about
Melanchra pulverulenta? see Tatum here. Can't tell how close that is.

Again
I think you are probably right. I'm not positive, though. I think I'll leave it at this level for a while longer. I'd like to see a list of Melanchra for MT.

...
Thanks!
I found one of these in our backyard, not very happy.
He was thrashing around everywhere, maybe he got hurt?

Closest match I can find is Black Arches,

They do look similar
but not enough to be a match. I know there are a lot similar to this coloring.

We would agree with Hannah
This looks identical to Wagner's image and description on pg 413. We'll move it to the genus at least since you seem uncertain of the species.
