Single swelling discovered on tall, lignified, post-growing season stem of Wild Lettuce (
Lactuca
cf.
canadensis
) in grassy old field.

Is there any chance this one was actually something asteraceous?
Certainly a similar-looking gall; I think it must be cynipid as well.

Yes
Glad you remembered that image from 3 years ago, Charley! (As I have observed before, you would make a great contestant on the old "Concentration" game!). In light of the strong similarity of these images, I think it quite likely that my dried stem of "wild carrot" back in 2009 was instead a dried stem of wild lettuce. Both images were from old fields where
Lactuca canadensis
would be right at home.
