Unidentified Aethes sp. - Aethes

Unidentified Aethes sp. - Aethes
n.w. Austin, Travis County, Texas, USA
November 26, 2012
Size: FW 5.5mm
I'm uploading images of three different individuals of this unidentified Aethes sp. from the Austin area; the present individual was photographed on two different surfaces. These match several of M. Dreiling's critters from OK such as this one; in BOLD analysis, Mark's specimens of this form sorted out close to, but distinct from, A. baloghi. Perhaps this is an undescribed sibling species. Here in Austin, they show up in late fall and winter at a porchlight in a wooded (juniper-elm-oak) suburban area. They are characterized by the following pattern (terminology after Sabourin & Miller 2002):

-- Brown spots and bands rather diffuse and/or with buff "aura".
-- IM fascia (=diagonal median band) narrow and interrupted, to nearly absent.
-- Anal crescent (dark spot on rear FW margin) small and bounded on rear wing margins by buff.
-- OM fascia (=subterminal spot on costa) absent
-- Subterminal line moderately to well developed, consisting of a row of brown spots.

My other images are found here and here.
