Beautiful pink spider - Acacesia hamata

Beautiful pink spider - Acacesia hamata
Battle Creek Cypress Swamp, Calvert County, Maryland, USA
August 22, 2006
Size: about 15mm including legs
I wonder if this is a nocturnal spider--it assumed this unusual posture (sleeping?) on the surface of a blackberry leaf and was surrounded entirely by thin webbing. It didn't move when I touched the leaf.

A. hamata
I remember seeing one of these in the woods on a hike once, back in my camera-less days, then trying for the past 10 years to explain it to people--"I saw a PINK spider, YES, PINK!" Now I know I'm not crazy! :D

Check out
Orb Weaver - Acacesia hamata. Images in the guide here. Beautiful image! Great addition to the guide.

Thank you
I'm glad to be able to contribute this immage to the Guide. Strange, the way they hold their legs.
