Hi Ethan,
I don't know about the moth ID, but you might get some sharper, brighter images with a flash. If you just have a pop-up flash, you can create a diffuser/suppressor so it can be used for close-up photography.

 
Hi Jim
I'm just making the best I can with a cheap Kodak EasyShare. Whenever you use flash with this camera, the picture doesn't turn out. Thanks for the info though!

 
I'm wondering
if you checked out Sean's diffuser/suppressor link that solves the built-in flash problem.
