Soil Centipede - Strigamia bothriopus

Soil Centipede - Strigamia bothriopus
Montpelier, Washington County, Vermont, USA
December 5, 2012
on an abnormally warm December morning, I decided to see if I could find any active invertebrates. This fellow was found under a rock near a small stream in mixed forest. I counted 53 pairs of legs!

Strigamia bothriopus
This specimen is a bit unusual in that it isn't bright red, but less brightly colored specimens turn up every so often. The segment count (53 as opposed to in the 30s)distinguishes it from S. chionophila, which is more typically this color.
