Size: 1/2 to 1 inch
taken at a local pond.. think its some kind of hover fly but not sure.. thanks in advance.. taken with a Nikon D70 and sigma 105 macro

looks like I have really started something here..look at both and have not found a picture of the same fly... thanks for the help.. lets keep trying...

Nope, check out the hindlegs, they have scale like hairs, which makes it Trichopoda (trans. "hairy feet"). this is a Tachinidae, they are parasitizing true bugs.
