Size: 1/2 to 1 inch
taken at a local pond.. think its some kind of hover fly but not sure.. thanks in advance.. taken with a Nikon D70 and sigma 105 macro

Nope, check out the hindlegs,
Nope, check out the hindlegs, they have scale like hairs, which makes it Trichopoda (trans. "hairy feet"). this is a Tachinidae, they are parasitizing true bugs.
