dark red pronotum clerid - Cymatodera - female

dark red pronotum clerid - Cymatodera - Female
Organ Mountains foothills, Dona Ana County, New Mexico, USA
August 9, 2006
Size: 8.6mm - 9mm
This beetle that came to my UV lights gave me pause because of its more sharply contricted posterior portion of its pronotum. I also thought the reddish color of the pronotum might signify a different species. The pronotal outline in fact is closest to the depiction of that for Lecontella in American Beetles, a genus that closely resembles Cyma*todera in appearance. Reading the genus description I came upon another clue: The larger elytral punctures are serrate in this genus. Finally, the genus has antennal termini that are fairly elongate, especially in the males. My guess is that this one is female since the termini seem rather subdued in length.

Moved from Lecontella.

Lecontella
This is actually a Cymatodera. Lecontella has the terminal antennomere very elongated. Also, in Lecontella the elytral punctures are quite a bit coarser. The color of the pronotum is, unfortunately, not a species specific feature in these genera.

Thank you, Jacques.
I'll move this to the correct genus.
