Pseudoscorpion - Chelifer cancroides

Pseudoscorpion - Chelifer cancroides
Cowichan Valley, British Columbia, Canada
December 6, 2012
Size: ~2.5-2.7mm body length
Ventral view, genital area and coxae. The darkened, sclerotized-looking genital area has me thinking male. Although there isn't much structure visible, there certainly seems to be something different about coxae IV which show darkening. More or less the same shape on both sides. I'm guessing genital sacs are present. I haven't been able to find Chamberlin 1952 online though, so I can't check the description of Haplochelifer philipi.

I thought at first that the well developed atria (30 in the key) were present because of the obvious structure between the coxae. But if it were, I suspect it wouldn't be so clear since the atria are internal? Must be something else. I checked out Dactylochelifer anyway and the palp femur length-to-width ratio is too long for both D. silvestris and D. copiosus (see D. silvestris in Hoff 1961). I haven't tried to measure it precisely, but it looks like it's over 5.

This photo was taken by placing him on his back against some tin foil with a tiny hole poked in it and covering him with the slide. My flash fired up through the hole to illuminate through his insides. Same method I've used with some difficult spider epigyna.
