The "things" are
the old dry head capsules shed by the earlier instars! See Wagner page 340

 
I read that.
Pretty strange! Does "capsule" mean the head portion of the old shed? I'm going to go out and see if I can find this caterpillar today. Maybe it'll stay on that lilac and I'll be able to watch till it cocoons itself.
