What the heck?? - Harmonia axyridis

What the heck?? - Harmonia axyridis
Herndon, Fairfax County, Virginia, USA
August 26, 2006
Size: abt. 5mm
I don't know if these are tiny pupae or what they are. There are two, kind of near each other, though on two different deck beams. I'm posting both photos. They weren't moving.

Moved
Moved from Ladybird Beetles.

Looks like...
Ladybird pupa, like here:

Wow, thanks!
Currently they look a little like something from a horror movie when you look up close! I've never seen them at this stage. Is it in between the long black things and the final beetle?

Yes
The progression is egg, larva, pupa, imago (adult) for beetles, flies, butterflies and other complete-metamorphosis insects.

I remember once years ago
I saw a huge cluster of ladybird beetles, all in various stages of metamorphosis, and I recall it looked like there were several different forms to this pupa stage - some shorter, some longer, and some looking very close to the final beetle but still segmented. I always wished I could find another cluster like that and photograph it, getting them all in one shot.

Harmonia axyridis?
The cast larval skin at the base (tail) of the pupa sure resembles a Harmonia axyridis. Thanks to your clear shot, this might be the first confirmed pupa stage we have of that species for Bugguide.

Thanks for the ID
They were still there when I checked yesterday; if they're still there this evening, I'll see if I can get any better shots. Or maybe they'll be at a different stage; we'll see!
