Cicadas are not among the easiest insects for most to id.
The litereature is not readily available and most of it is a bit technical. Additionally, many species may be similar in appearance and difficult to differentiate, while on the flip side of the coin, some taxa may be subject to variation (incl. color forms &/or geographic forms) and can look quite different.
