Explanation of Names

Etymology of this name is not obvious. Perhaps from Greek syrtis, sandbank (1), plus (?). Perhaps (!) means "dweller in the sand".

Numbers

Nearctica.com lists one North American species, Sirthenea carinatus.

Range

Includes eastern and southwestern North America. Genus is widespread in Old World: Asia, Africa.
