I'm seeing plenty of these in the leaf litter now. Is it some sort of midge larva, fly larva or something else?

Cecidomyiidae larva
Kim you are right on this one. It is definetly a midge larva (cecidomyiidae). They are plentiful in the newly fallen leaf pack and graze on the mycelial growth. This one looks very much like it fits the subfamily Porricondylinae. It has the light pink outline with an orange mid-gut. You have a great photo here.
