Possibly a Milkweed Bug juvenile. When you see antennae composed of just a few joints like this, suspect a bug. Most beetles have over twice this many antennal segments.

Thanks Jim for the id. Because you sent me toward a bug, I found a picture of an adult large milkweed bug with nymphs just like my photo in The Audubon Sodiety Field Guide to NA Insects and Spiders.

 
I believe this is actually the small milkweed bug
Stephen Luk recently pointed out some differences in a comment in ID Request. Redder in general than Large Milkweed Bug, and with two diagonal black markings on the thorax.
