Midge? - Trichocera

Midge? - Trichocera
Seattle, King County, Washington, USA
January 4, 2013
A swarm of 20 or so of these appeared during a brief sunbreak on a 50F day. They exhibited a striking behavior, "yo-yoing" rapidly up and down about 2-4' off the lawn.

Winter crane fly
Winter crane fly, Trichocera. Bobbing up and down is what they do. Probably a male mating swarm.

Winter crane fly
