The key I have uses fine details of the legs. If you have a closeup of the "toes" that might help.

Nonbiting
These flies don't bite. Noseeums are (usually?) Ceratopogonidae, mostly
Culicoides
.

Winter Midges
Do anyone know where these winter bugs go when the temperature drops? I photographed 4 different kinds on a warm night, but the next night was well below freezing. Do they freeze up or go into some kind of hibernation?

The general subject of animals in the winter is covered in

but I don't recall anything about insects that are active one day and then it freezes hard the next.
