Aqua Winged Specimen - Orchelimum nigripes

Aqua Winged Specimen - Orchelimum nigripes
Ontario, Canada
August 29, 2006
Size: approx 2inches long
I found this bug in my backyard, attached to the stem of a peony bush. The only reason I found it was because of the noise it was making. It was so loud and unusual it somewhat freaked me out. I didnt want it to be a snake. Its sound is a click click followed by a long hissing sound. It repeats this over and over. Most folks Ive talked to or showed this image to assume cecada, however Ive looked at other cecadas and it doesnt look anything like this. Also it doesnt make the same noise. Any thoughts on what it might be would be appreciated.
Thanks

I agree with Black-legged Meadow Katydid (Orchelimum nigripes).

its def a katydid. red-headed meadow katydid possibly. let the experts confirm my guess.

see guide here: http://bugguide.net/index.php?q=search&keys=red-headed+meadow+katydid&search=Search

Close.
I am leaning more towards the black-legged meadow katydid, in the same genus (Orchelimum, aka Orchelium). Great shot showing the camouflage orientation of these insects. It is a male given that it was singing.

Black legged meadow kaydid
Thanks for your input. Is this a typical bug to be found in Southwestern Ontario? It seems quite happy in my garden as he is still there. Looking for a mate? Will he do any major damage to the garden?
thanks again
