Cloudless Sulphur or Orange-barred Sulphur ? - Phoebis philea

Cloudless Sulphur or Orange-barred Sulphur ? - Phoebis philea
Pinellas County, Florida, USA
June 29, 2012
I did not see the butterfly in flight so don't know the color from above and did not note the size. I originally labeled it as an Orange-barred but after consulting Butterflies through Binoculars, the Florida version, I am not sure.

Any suggestions on telling these two apart when the upper surface of the wings isn't seen is appreciated.

Thank you.

I'm inclined to agree - P. philea
You are certianly in the right place to see a P. philea!

I'm inclined to agree with your initial call - looks to be a male P. philea. The coloration and reduced ventral patterns (silver/white spots) are suggestive of this insect being a male "Orange-barred".....but there can be some overlap in ventral characters between genders and among the members of this Genus.

Thank you
I use a digital recorder to record notes but didn't have any for this butterfly on that day. I see many more P. sennae but almost all of my observations of P. philea have been very fleeting flight views so I need much more experience viewing them.
