Banded Sphinx Caterpillar Posterior Features - Eumorpha fasciatus

Banded Sphinx Caterpillar Posterior Features - Eumorpha fasciatus
Auburn, Lee County, Alabama, USA
September 26, 2012
This image provides some detail on the posterior end of a Banded Sphinx caterpillar Eumorpha fasciatus, Hodges 7865. The detail of the "eye" in the central portion of the image is fascinating. Are there functional features to these "eye" structures (such as some sensory function) or are they simply a marking with no function at all?

What you are looking at are the spiracles. Spiracles are the openings to the trachea of the respiratory system, present on all insects.
