Wingless female

There are some moths species with wingless females (or greatly reduced wings). Yours could be something like Alsophila pometaria, said to be active after the first frost. Someone else will know.

Based on the picture, it still looks (or looked) alive. I don't think it could sit/stand up like that if dead. Many moths I've seen (especially at night) will sit unmoved for hours. With this being wingless, it seems like it'd be especially restricted in mobility. Maybe something to research :-)

I'll look into it. It moved later in the day and wasn't on the ground below where it had be perched, so I'm guessing it was in fact still alive.
