Chlorion aerarium
Based on the other two images, this is Chlorion aerarium, a relative of Sphex. Do you have images of the entire insect?

I checked out some pics of the Chlorion aerarium as well as the blue mud wasp and Sphex. I easily see the difference between this and the Sphex, and the only issue I have now is the purple metallic color of the wings on the specimen i have. I have seen others with the brown wings like the Chlorion pics show. I have also seen smaller blue wasps with the shiny wings. Is one of these a difference between sexes or are they all different species? Or is wing color variable?

Wing color
Many kinds of wasps have the iridescent sheen to their wings, especially those with dark wings. The intensity depends on the angle at which light hits the wings. It is NOT pigment.

Until I get a regular digital camera, I do not. All I have right now is the camera built into my microscope. This is the lowest magnification. I will look up the name you gave me and compare though, thanks! We have been referring to it as the "cricket killer" but wanted to confirm.
