brownish-orange beetle - side - Harpalus indianus
Ailsa Craig, Middlesex, Ontario, Canada
August 30, 2006
Size: 8-10 mm
Came to light; reminds me of Geopinus incrassatus but at 8-10 mm is only half to two-thirds the size listed for that species (15 mm) at Ground Beetles of Canada.

Do they get this small? Or could this be something else in the tribe Harpalini perhaps? Only 7 of the 28 Ontario species of Harpalus, for example, are pictured at the Ground Beetles of Canada site.

Harpalus sp.?
How about a Harpalus sp., something like H. indianus or H. eraticus (seen here) http://biology.luther.edu/haeratic.htm? Downie and Arnett list H. eraticus as 11-18mm, but H. indianus listes as 9.8-10.7mm.

Thanks; possibly H. indianus
as it's on the Ontario list, but I couldn't find a photo of that species.

I think H. erraticus can be ruled out: the photos at Luther College and CBIF both show a sort of indented flange near the apex of the elytra (not present in my photo), and their elytra look more elongate and approximately parallel-sided for much of their length, whereas the elytra on my beetle begin to taper sooner, producing a relatively pointed apex - more like Geopinus, which is why I'm wondering whether this one is just a miniature version...

H. indianus indeed
see MCZ type of its junior syn., Pangus testaceus LeConte
