Physocnemum violaceipenne - female

Physocnemum violaceipenne - Female
7 km east of Paw Paw, Morgan County, West Virginia, USA
June 17, 1989
Size: 12.5 mm
Flying over freshly cut mixed oak and pine branches. Looks like P. violaceipenne in Yanega's guide but that is the only image I can find and I have never collected brevilineum to compare. Not sure why this species is not included in Lingafelter's book? Found on dry ridge dominated by oak and hickory with the closest elms almost a mile away.

Physocnemum violaceipenne host...
is white oak, in my experience. I beat one specimen from a cut branch and then reared a second specimen from the same piece of wood...

White Oaks
Yes, apart from a few scattered Scarlet Oaks, the area was dominated by Chestnut Oak and White Oak - so that would be very likely. I should have collected some branches from that brush pile - too late now! Also, I took another photo this morning with a slightly better camera in an attempt to better show the dark purple coloration.

thanks for the additions! will have your IDs checked
