Western Hickory Horned Devil - Citheronia splendens

Western Hickory Horned Devil - Citheronia splendens
Orange County, Florida, USA
September 1, 2006
Size: > 6 inches
Raised by a private collector. The only hickory horned devils I've photographed before have been green in color. He has a distinct grayish coloration. Would be interested in this one's scientific name as the only catepillars I can find on the internet are the green colored ones which I've seen and shot before.

He at least 6 inches long and the width of my thumb. Never have seen one this big

Very cool
This is Citheronia splendens sinaloensis, "a Mexican species whose northern limit extends into extreme southern Arizona" (http://bugguide.net/node/view/39224/bgref?from=16 Tuskes et al). Habitats include Desert arroyos with wild cotton and hillsides with manzanita. Time for a new guide page! Neato.
