32)Dolicho_19Aug06.jpg - Liancalus genualis - Male
Bay of Fundy sea cliffs, Kings County, Nova Scotia, Canada
August 19, 2006
Size: ~7 mm (head-tip abdomen)
Pinned male specimen (see also live female, #74510 and #74513, from same date), wings held at unnatural angle here so can be seen clearly. Note distinctive black wing tip with small clear "eyespot", not present in female (female has a couple of indistinct dark stripes, not present in male). Male has two long genital appendages, the left one of which is just visible from this photo.
I'd like to know the I.D. (genus/species if possible) if anyone has an idea. I'm guessing that the male's wing tips must be species-diagnostic. Update 9 September 06: kindly identified as Liancalus genualis (Loew), Dolichopodidae, by specialist Scott Brooks, Ottawa. Apparently the only eastern species in the genus.

Confusing
If this is a different individual it should be linked by using [thumb=#], instead of "same individual".
Also, I suggest that you move them to family level in case that a specialist looks at such pages, they get rather lost in ID request.

Thanks, Beatriz, but reply also partly confusing to new user
1) I'm new on this site: I can see what you mean since I didn't realize initially that the 5 digit number 75416 is the picture's ID. I've edited the remarks so the 3 pictures cross refer by their numbers, which are not consecutive.
2) [thumb=#] must be shorthand for some operation, but I'm not sure what (see 5)).
3) I agree that I should move them into Dolichopodidae now, but I can't find instructions on how to do that, unless I upload the pictures again. Is that how? -- seems clunky.
4) A recently acquired dolicho specialist in the Diptera unit in Ottawa, Scott Brooks, kindly IDd the images as Liancalus genualis (Loew), so I've added this ID on each picture.
5) A general comment is that Bugguide is a great site, but could use an "Instructions" page to deal with things like 1)-3) above, for incoming novices.

Great contribution!
Ided by a professional it becomes more valuable. We just added a new genus and new species to the guide (only editors can create new pages, so I just did).
There are instructions under Help, it still can take a while to get used to moving images around and creating links to other images (that is what [thumb:#] refers to; you will find it under Markup in Help).
I'll move these images for you to the new page and link this image to the two females by replacing # with the images numbers.
This male was found near these females
.
You may want to try to do the same, linking the females to this male, if not I'll do it for you.
Welcome to Bugguide! We love contributions that add something new to it.
