Judging by what can be seen of the abdomen, and the proportions of the head and thorax, I'm pretty sure this is a female. However, I can't quite see enough to be absolutely certain. The females are usually short-winged, but not always.

Absolutely beautiful Horse Lubber
Absolutely beautiful male Taeniopoda eques - The Horse Lubber Grasshopper! The long wings indicate it is a male. I am not sure if all males have long wings, but as far as I can remember, females never have long wings. Finally, a guide page can be created for this species. Great pic. I believe you may want to direct your picture toward Eric Eaton, who is excellent at identifying grasshoppers and I would think would be interested in this photo.

Eric Eaton
I did send a picture to Eric Eaton before posting here. He was quite pleased. After taking the picture, I went to the web to identify what it was and found a discription by Eric. I contacted him and he suggested my sending a picture to BugGuide. Glad to help out!
