flying insect - Psorophora ciliata - female

flying insect - Psorophora ciliata - Female
Townsend, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA
September 1, 2006
Size: ~12mm
There were tons of mosquitoes landing on my arms, and I swatted this one without looking, thinking it was just another mosquito.

Looks like
a mosquito (female) to me.

I know
with the proboscus, it does look like a mosquito, but it was many times larger than any mosquito I've ever seen.

mosquito
tom murray,

you have swatted a great discovery. I am pretty sure what you have destroyed is a worn out Psorophora ciliata. Know, that Mass too far up north for them. You may have found a special colony up there. In RI we have only caught 3 since 2001. In Connecticut there is no collection data.

...
Au contraire mon ami,
I found this pdf of a record from Connecticut:
http://www.mosquitocatalog.org/pdfs/138560-2.PDF#search=%22psorophora%20ciliata%20identification%22
Then again, these are from some time ago.

hmm
my Connecticut book says that there is no collection data. Maybe they just havent caught it. It also does say ' This species is not attracted to CDC CO2 - light traps", So maybe thats why.

merci beaucoup a la "correction?"

...
De rien.

WOW!!!
I didn't know mosquitoes grew that large. I'll have to go back and try to find another one and collect it for a positive id. Thanks for the help Omar!!!
