Giant Swallowtail Female? - Papilio cresphontes

Giant Swallowtail Female? - Papilio cresphontes
San Antonio area, Bexar County, Texas, USA
August 27, 2006
This beauty was looking for a sip in the afternoon heat the other day while I was out watering and let me get a couple of nice shots before drifting off to the back pasture.

The first stop was for a brief rest on a Honeysuckle Vine in my backyard allowing me a few shots like this one. Then to an area on the concrete slab that was wet where it landed for a sip while I took a few more close ups.

Undoubtedly a Giant Swallowtail
If you check out the guide you'll see we haven't got them marked M or F, because the markings are just about identical - the shape of the abdomen might be a clue, or behavior. Generally it's the male swallowtails that "puddle" like this, but I can't say for sure that a thirsty female would not take a drink this way.

Ok thanks . . .
I'll add these image to the guide for range and date information. (since there are currently none recorded for Texas in Aug.)
