I think it is a male mutilid.

 
this is a nocturnal mutillid.
this is a nocturnal mutillid. probably sphaeropthalma or odontophotopsis. if you find anymore hold on to them for me, Utah state university wants any nocturnal mutillids from CA.

 
Sphaeropthalma
Probably Sphaeropthalma unicolor based on coloration and locality, these are even harder to ID than the eastern Dasymutilla though.
