Autumn Yellow-winged Grasshopper - Arphia xanthoptera

Autumn Yellow-winged Grasshopper - Arphia xanthoptera
Kohler-Andrae State Park, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, USA
September 3, 2006
This appears to be an Autumn yellow-winged grasshopper. It did show the yellow in its wing in flight and the white band across the leg seems to match. Looking for verification.

Arphia pseudonietana
This is a female A. pseudonietana. The overall coloration and the wings of A. granulata (varied in color) and of A. pseudonietana (almost always red, but sometimes orange or yellow (particularly in the upper Midwest) are very similar. They fly at the same time, and are similar, but the ridge on the pronotum of A. pseudonietana is not elevated into a crest the way it is on A. xanthoptera. Males of this species are often quite black, but females are often mottled/speckled dark gray or brown. White or tan markings on the legs and pronotum are fairly common in this species. You can also see that the underside of the abdomen is quite dark, also typical of A. pseudonietana.
