Predaceous beetle larva?

Predaceous beetle larva?
Monte Bello OSP, Santa Clara County, California, USA
March 15, 2013
Size: ~2cm
At close to 10 p.m. on our way out of a permitted scouting hike, we found this insect on the trail, where grassland meets a riparian area and where we had found what appeared to be a Phengodid larva/female last March. It was about 56F, relatively mild.
Aside from the six legs, there were stumpy anal prolegs (I'm assuming a pair)? that it used to move its hind end. The dorsal side had plates that remind me of certain millipede plates. The lighter ventral side had, at least between the third legs and prolegs, a row of round "spots" of similar color on both sides (bigger than spiracles). The antennae had sparse medium length "hairs" perpendicular to the shaft. I tried to look at the eyes but couldn't tell what I was looking at. The mouthparts looked sickle-shaped, close to the head.
