I found this while planting in my garden. Was approx 6" below surface. It was very active moving inside.

Manduca
pupa...a hawkmoth..there are several possibilitys as to who this is is one of which is the beautiful rustic sphinx moth manduca rustica..that loop thingie is his probiscus for drinking nectar..place in a container with a stick so he can he can cling to it and inflate his wings and wait a few more weeks..
