Is this a Checkered White or a Western White?
At the Butterflies and Moths of North America website, they show a picture just like yours, but they call it a Western White. The reason I'm curious is, I took a picture of a butterfly that looks just like yours today. (September 9th, 2006.) I live in Southern Illinois, in White County. According to BaMoNA, they don't list the Western White as being anywhere near my area. (Although they show the Checkered White all around me.) I'll upload my picture, even though it's terrible. I didn't have time to do anything but point at it and click once.

I'm not familiar with Western White, which isn't in this area.
Distribution seems to be pretty limited, i.e. from very Northern California up. Checkered White is very common here, blanketing almost the entire territory covered by Butterflies Through Binoculars: The West, which is the source for my info. (The book says the two are very hard to distinguish, then gives some points of difference.)

Mine is Checkered White, and I'll bet yours is too. (BTW, I didn't see your image, but wouldn't know the difference if I did!)
