I think this is a White Lined Sphinx Moth getting ready to pupate. A couple of days later I found it hanging by a thread from an evening primrose leaf.

How did you come to this ID?
I've not seen any white-lined sphinx caterpillars with so few markings. This looks more like Hemaris thysbe to me - Wagner's picture has the same subdorsal stripe and orange spiracles. Also, he says that some individuals are pink. Compare:
