Red Imported Fire Ants - Solenopsis invicta

Red Imported Fire Ants - Solenopsis invicta
The Woodlands, Montgomery County, Texas, USA
September 4, 2006
Our first attempt to learn about ants. We've looked through the guide, and thought this may be in the Formicinae subfamily. Is it possible to ID further from this image? We've had a hard time getting them still enough to photograph. In this pic, it was more of a depth of focus issue- some are in focus, some are out. Any help would be appreciated (on shooting ants or ID.) :)

Also, does anyone recognize the cat they are eating? I posted some pics of the same species (but alive) here, and haven't yet gotten any takers.

Those are Solenopsis species.
Those are Solenopsis species. subfamily myrmecinae

Should have known
These are the ants that leave a painful bite, for an irritating couple of days of itchy pain.

There are better images than this in the guide, but none from Texas. Moving to the guide, with the hopes of replacing with a crisper image soon.
