unknown bee? - Nicrophorus tomentosus

unknown bee? - Nicrophorus tomentosus
Medina County, Ohio, USA
September 7, 2006
Size: around an inch
this thing was half bee, half beetle. it had a furry yellowish neck like a bee but had red and black wings like a beetle. it also had a pointed butt with a possible stinger.

if it helps any, it was borering into/eating a dead mole that my cat left on our porch.

...
It is a burying beetle of the family Silphidae, genus Nicrophorus. They bury dead animals for their larvae to consume. I am sure someone here knows the species.

This is a Nicrophorus beetle... I guess somebody could even tell the species...

Nicrophorus tomentosus
Pretty sure this is Nicrophorus tomentosus. It's the only species I have ever seen of this genus in NE Ohio.
