Ground Beetle - Harpalus

Ground Beetle - Harpalus
Parkwood, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
June 15, 2006
Size: 15 mm
At a lighted sheet--length measured in place (about 15 mm, corrected 1/4/08). This looks rather like Lynette's image:

I at first thought this was an Harpalus calignosus due to the size, but then I realized its legs were brown, not black, as that species is supposed to have:

Also, the size was rather smaller than Harpalus calignosus I've seen previously.

Harpalus - subgenus Pseudoophonus
Habitus and pale legs fits Harpalus - subgenus Pseudoophonus. Double check body length as "18 mm" is almost too long for the larger common species in this subgenus: H. pensylvanicus, H. compar. I feel that the image does not provide enough detail to secure a species determination. But if I had to guess based on gestalt, I would say "Harpalus pensylvanicus".

Correction on length
Looking at original photo adjacent to ruler, this was 15-16 mm, not 18 mm.
I have other views, such as a frontal view of the head--would that be of any help in ID?

Revised size better supports subgenus Pseudoophonus
in genus Harpalus. A direct overhead close-up shot of base and hind angle area of pronotum might clinch the species identification, i.e., H. pensylvanicus has distinct interruption of pronotal basal bead laterally.
