ID for a robber fly? - Machimus occidentalis - female

ID for a robber fly? - Machimus occidentalis - Female
Claremont, Los Angeles County, California, USA
April 14, 2013
This robber fly was spotted in an area of mixed grassland and recovering coastal sage scrub at the Claremont College's Robert J. Bernard Biological Field Station. It appears to have caught one of the little scarab beetles, Dichelonyx truncata, that were abundant in the area where this robber was spotted. Any information about its identity will be greatly appreciated!

Note: I rotated the photo 45° in order to make the robber a bit larger. It was actually horizontal.

Cool!
Thanks, Eric! It's great to have an ID – this will be a new species for our field station invert list! I know we have quite a few more unidentified robbers, and I hope to post more. It's not always easy to get sufficient detail for an ID in a photo, however....
