Butterfly (Black) - Erynnis horatius

Butterfly (Black) - Erynnis horatius
Columbia, Boone County, Missouri, USA
September 7, 2006
Size: inch or so
seems simalair to a black witch... but smaller... any ideas? Thanks!

Moved
Moved from Duskywings.

thanks!
thanks for being able to finally clear up what type of Dustywing that was!

maybe juvenal
looks more like pics of the juvenal... thanks all!!

Dusky
If this was taken this week it is more likely a Wild Indigo Duskywing. There are no Juvenal's flying now. And certainly none in December.

lol...
no cluw why it said december sorry bout that... it was taken last week

My understanding
is that Juvenal's flys only in the spring while Horace's flies in the spring and later in the season. That'd speak for this beging Horace's.

The Wild Indigo's I see are darker overall than this, but that could be regional. They could certainly be flying now as well.

Erynnis is a very hard genus. Sorry!

okay... thanks!
thanks!

The December date
is confusing! Choosing between Horace's and Juvenal's is easier if
you know when the adult was flying.

I think it might be...
a Horace's Duskywing -- Erynnis horatius
