Schistocerca
This is a bird grasshopper, genus Schistocerca. It looks a lot like the Gray Bird Grasshopper, Schistocerca nitens which is a large species that is found throughout the Southwest.

I'm just beginning to seek IDs for my grasshoppers and am finding a lot of birds among them. As a kid, these were my favorite insects.
