ID strenghened by comparison with type

tentative ID
. . . species page erected nontheless.
A mexican source gives Sphaeralcea as the hot plant of C.serpentina, one of eight species listed for Texas.
The single available
illustration - unusual, of course! - matches well in pattern.

The reason, why I decide the ID as safe enough to create a page for the species is, that Calligrapha spp. are pretty food-specific, and the plant association is beyond doubt in your case, because larvae were on the plant.

What a beautiful beetle!
Great shot! =)

Thank you for the compliment. A subscriber (couple) just posted a message which helped identify my mystery beetle. They think--and I do, too--that this is a Calligrapha. There were dozens of them in my yard this summer. And they are so beautiful. Hope they are back next year!

Wow! I've searched in vain for a similar picture. By golly, I think you've got it. Some of those in the guide appear exactly like the ones in my yard. Thanks so very much for solving the mystery.
