Got to be American Copper. Too late for Bog Copper and too small for Bronze Copper. See my page on the species at http://www.rlephoto.com/butterflies/copper_american01.htm

and of the three VT species (see BMNA), yours looks most like American Copper (below):

Thanks, Hannah -- I think you have the right species. I should see if I have a better shot of the underside hindwing, since the "broad orange outer margin" on L. hyllus versus the "submarginal row of orange-red zigzags" of L. phlaeas seems like a clear distinction.
