Melanotus communis may not occur in southern plains. Cannot reliably determine Melanotus spp. without genitalia.

we are not calling this communis, proper
It is currently placed in a 'communis-complex' (see the info. page for details).
Interesting observation about communis in the South. During my current SE study, I have found true communis to be rare; I've seen very few records of true communis. Most specimens in this complex are variations of similis. Quite a few decumanus (esp. in the mountains and Piedmont) and spadix too. Even seen more indistinctus, miscellus, and verberans than true communis :)
