Eastern Ochodaeidae? - Xenochodaeus musculus

Eastern Ochodaeidae? - Xenochodaeus musculus
Beltsville, College Park County, Maryland, USA
May 14, 2013
Size: 6mm
Collected in a farm blacklight trap. I am not aware of any species in this family this far northeast, but it looks 'Ochodaeidish' with the color, the size, the mandibles prominently pointing forward and a serrate mesotibial spur.

excellent find!

Sweet!
It's pretty tedious picking through the piles of carabids and scarabs we get in these blacklight traps to do BMSB and ECB counts but we occasionally get something cool like this that makes it feel like a treasure hunt. Are there any Ochodaeid species that occur in the Midatlantic that are just rarely seen or is this a possible range expansion for a more southeastern species?

this one ranges into Ontario
