Cimbicid Larva - Cimbex americanus

Cimbicid Larva - Cimbex americanus
Ed St. Vincent Milay's estate, Columbia County, New York, USA
July 9, 2012
Can this be taken to genus?
It was found in a meadow, well away from the possible host plant trees at the field margin. There were no signs that it had been eating the plant. Perhaps it had entered the field to find a suitable place to pupate?
