Connecting images
Hope no one minds. I've been researching this one in my spare time (nothing yet), but I do want to find out what it is. I am connecting this image to another one hoping if one gets IDed they both will.

I found one as well.
I'm fairly sure it was dangling from a maple tree.

sort of similar from the west coast

and from Ontario, Canada

Host tree
What types of trees were they?

Pine trees
At least that's what I seem to remember.

Silk line suggests lep.
Also, the tail end appears to have more of a lep-type shape, with broad false feet. An underside view would no doubt settle it but I'll bet there isn't one.

Yes,
You're probably right. I missed the silk line comment. The tail end does look very lep like, even though those body sections are so crazy for a caterpillar! I hope we can ID this.

Caterpillar
It's an odd looking one, and these aren't in Wagner's book, so identification chances get slim. Thanks for the observations and comments.

Tom
Keep in mind I really have no clue on this one, but it reminds me more of a beetle larva.
