Ladybug with paint job issues - Hippodamia convergens

Ladybug with paint job issues - Hippodamia convergens
Seminole, Seminole County, Oklahoma, USA
May 17, 2013
We have a dirt pile that has it's own little eco-system going amongst the weeds. There are many, MANY ladybugs there. I know they're variable, and I've seen quite a few ladybugs in my life, but this one looks like his paint job got smeared! A new one for me.

Hippodamia convergens, damaged in pupa
"Extra" spots and discolored patches are the result of damage to the pupa while the elytra were forming. A tiny hole or a slight bruise won't kill the insect, but it will allow humidity, pollutants, and bacteria in, all of which can change the appearance of the adult beetle.

guessing, Hippodamia convergens
