Bark Larva

Bark Larva
Herndon, Fairfax County, Virginia, USA
September 9, 2006
Size: 8 mm
Can anyone tell me what this is and what it does? I'm trying to figure out if its presence under the bark of a fallen limb from my tulip tree denotes guilt or is merely circumstantial. The tree has already lost most of its leaves, and has large strips of bark hanging from some limbs. I'm trying to hunt down the source of the problem... Is this the culprit or an innocent bystander???

Not guilty!
Dear Ashley,

I do not know to which beetle family this one belongs - but is is sure not a wood feeder. It may rather be predacious or feeding on fungal tissue.

cheers, Boris

Thanks
for the info, Boris! The search for the culprit continues...
